Rosaline’s story is more interesting than the story of Romeo and Juliet.
We are all familiar with Romeo and Juliet, but who knows Rosaline Capulet? “Rosaline” is the latest Hulu Original film that is now available to watch on Disney+ Hotstar.
The film is adapted from the modern novel, “When You Were Mine” in 2012 (by Rebecca Serle), which was inspired by “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare. So, who is Rosaline? Rosaline, played by Kaitlyn Dever in this film is a former Romeo. Romeo’s idol before he finally changed his heart to Juliet as in the legendary romance story that we have known so far.
Rosaline is the daughter of the Capulet family, while Romeo (Kyle Allen) is the son of the Montague family. The two cannot declare a love because their families are hostile to each other. When Romeo has a crush on his cousin, Juliet (Isabela Merced), Rosaline and Dario (Sean Tale), the man she was betrothed to, do everything to sabotage their relationship.
Semi-Parody “Romeo and Juliet” from Rosaline’s Perspective
Kaitlyn Dever is a young actress who previously gave her best performances in the film “Booksmart” (2019) and the Netflix series, “Unbelievable”. This time we will see her as Rosaline, the daughter of the Capulet family who tends to be a tomboy, free-spirited, and has a hard personality.
He made his father dizzy because he didn’t want to get married either, considering his age (according to period drama standards) was not young anymore. Because Rosaline really fell in love with Romeo. Still looking for a way how the two of them can live happily together. Rosaline as the protagonist in this story is seen as a contrasting character from the Shakespeare universe that is the setting in this film.
Unlike heroin characters who are graceful and melancholic, Rosaline has an aura of sarcasm that is relevant to today’s bitchy women. He commented on Romeo’s being too dramatic and made more rational points in the romance story which had only been driven by lust and the illusion of love. As a modern audience, we will side with Rosaline with a slightly more layered characterization when compared to Romeo and Juliet which is only one-dimensional.
Kaitlyn Dever does not play a villainous ex-lover in this film. Rosaline could be the only character with the clearest way of thinking in this story. Not all of us think the story of Romeo and Juliet is a legendary romantic love story. There must also be those of us who think that their love is blind, naive, and tends to be ridiculous rather than tragic. “Rosaline” seems to be a representative of our opinion that does not like this story by Shakespeare.
Period Drama with Modern Packaging
More and more period dramas now have modern presentations. From the “Bridgerton” series to the Netflix movie, “Persuasion”. “Rosaline” also follows the trend of period dramas which have recently had a modern presentation. The execution of the dialogue in this film feels like a teen romance film with informal language.
Some characters also show attitudes like people today and talk like us. One of Rosaline’s who dared to say what she was thinking. Then his friend, Paris (Spencer Stevenson), does not want to marry a woman.
We will also listen to modern songs as the soundtrack for “Rosaline”. This period film also has a product that is quite eye-catching with its costumes and makeup. If recently we look at the production of period dramas with western nuances, “Rosaline” shows references to classic Italian. Starting from hairdressing, and choosing clothes, it becomes a fairly new dish and is in accordance with the source material.
Rosaline and Dario vs. Romeo and Juliet
In the original Shakespeare version, Rosaline is Capulet’s niece who rejects Romeo’s love. Making Romeo finally fall in love with Juliet. Rosaline is not very prominent in the story that we know so far. Therefore “Rosaline” uses that premise to create an alternative perspective of the story “Romeo and Juliet”. Meanwhile, Dario, played by actor Sean Tale, is a companion character in this scenario. The story of Rosaline and Dario looks more interesting and ‘alive’ when compared to the love story of Romeo and Juliet.
Using the formula for the romance drama ‘hate becomes love’, Rosaline goes through a more exciting adventure sequence with Dario. Obviously, this film has a script that is biased towards Rosaline and Dario, and they managed to convince us to be more interested in their story.
Meanwhile, Romeo and Juliet’s scenario is a side plot. Kaitlyn Dever and Sean Tale have great chemistry even from the very first scene they met. Not a melancholy and lovey-dovey love relationship, but rather an enchanting introduction stage to raise the seeds of love. Dario is described as an adventurous sailor man, more macho when compared to Romeo who prefers to write poetry. Dario does look more compatible with Rosaline.
Overall, “Rosaline” is a comedy semi-parody period drama that is fun to watch. At least the plot and chronology are clear to listen to. Especially for those of us who are not too ‘click’ with the story of Romeo and Juliet so far.
