When the content is able to make the audience feel anxious and paranoid, then the content can be categorized as horror. Crime films can also be packed with horror treatments. There are also many crime films that we may not realize actually have horror elements. Here are a series of recommendations for the best crime horror films that are worth watching.
“Seven” is one of the classic crime films that have a horror vibe. Tells the story of a young detective, David Mills (Brad Pitt), and a senior detective who is about to retire, William Somerset (Morgan Freeman). The two are currently investigating a serial murder case by a maniac who adopted the 7 deadly sins in his method.
“Seven” has pretty gore visual content at every crime scene. The cold-blooded killer John Doe (Kevin Spacey) has also become one of the iconic psychopathic characters in pop culture. Mysterious and unpredictable, John Doe will have us worrying about the fate of our two detectives throughout the film.
The Silent of the Lambs (1991)
“The Silence of the Lambs” is also the best in the classic crime horror catalog. Directed by Jonathan Demme, this is the first horror film to win Best Picture at the 64th Academy Awards. So far, no horror film has managed to join this film in dominating the Oscars.
Maybe many of us know this film as a cannibal-themed film. Whereas overall, this plot doesn’t really expose cannibalism with gore content. However, it is thicker with the crime horror genre with elements of mystery and suspense. Where we will follow the investigation of a young FBI agent, Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster). He takes the risk of asking for guidance from the most dangerous intelligent prisoner, Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins).
At first glance “1922” may seem like a supernatural horror with a curious spirit with a vengeance. However, this Stephen King adaptation is actually the best crime horror film we can watch on Netflix.
In the summer of 1922, a farmer (Thomas Jane) plots to kill his wife because of disagreements over the future of their plantation. He was haunted by guilt and began to question the truth of the decision he had taken.
“1922” became a film that wanted to interpret ‘ghost’ which can manifest in various ways. Not always from curious spirits or mystical things in general.
Don’t Breathe (2016)
Home invasion is one of the most popular themes in Hollywood horror films. One of the best is “Don’t Breathe”, but this is no ordinary home invasion horror film.
Three master robbers break into the property of a blind man who is considered easy to trick. Until in the end the situation turned around and gave rise to a tense claustrophobic horror. Even without ghosts and paranormal elements, “Don’t Breathe” manages to bring suspense and cause anxiety to the audience.
Shutter Island (2010)
“Shutter Island” is the latest neo-noir film directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, and Ben Kingsley. Teddy Daniels and Chuck Aule are two detectives assigned to investigate the most dangerous disappearance of prisoners at the institution on Shutter Island. A remote island where mental rehabilitation centers stand, ranging from patients with mild mental illness to criminals with special needs.
This film has psychological thriller elements that are full of mysteries for the audience to solve. Watching “Shutter Island” many times we can find a new perspective in this film.
The Call (2020)
“The Call” is a Korean horror film that can be watched on Netflix. Tells the story of two women who are able to communicate across eras using an antique telephone in their home.
Seo-Yeon (Park Shin-Hye) hopes to change the past and save her dead father. He also asks for help with Oh Young-sook (Jeon Jong-Seo), a woman who was abused by her mother in the past. However, Seo-Yeon doesn’t realize that there are big consequences waiting for her by changing the past. The film has a fantasy element which adds an element of horror to the overall plot.
“Kala” is a local neo-noir film by director Joko Anwar. Janus (Fachry Albar) is a man whose life is falling apart because he has narcolepsy. While investigating an unnatural death case, he finds himself in a conspiracy circle about mystical treasures.
The neo-noir nuance in “Kala” is very visible as a reference from the west, but it is combined with horror characteristics and local legends that are quite interesting to listen to. “Kala” can be watched on Disney+ Hotstar.
